Golf Course Review

Review Course: Myrtlewood Palmetto February 21st 2010

Played Myrtlewood Palmetto today. Overall the course was in pretty good shape.

Greens had more speed than expected compared to the last couple visits in past years. I'd say speed was between medium and medium-fast. Speed was very consistent from hole to hole, and had no issues judging speed accordingly unlike Brunswick the previous day. I think the overseed still needs to fill in a little better as there was still some waivering in the roll of the putts, however nothing a couple weeks of warm weather won't solve. Our foursome made our fair share of putts on the day so the overall the greens were fine.

Fairways I was a bit disappointed with, they look great from the road with a dark green color. However up close they definitely need more time for the overseed to fill. The bermuda base is scalped really low, almost non-existent, and the overseed settled into the furrows created by the verti-cut. As a result the ball settles in between the rows of overseed so you have a very tight lie with no grass underneath and raised ridges of overseed grass around the ball making it tough to make clean contact. I think if the overseed is sown without the verticut process the fairways would turn out better in the December to February time frame. Of course by mid-March and April the point is moot since the fairways will fill in by then. Today the fairways on a number of holes I actually observed a little bit of roll which was good, especially later in the day, but on some others it was plug & play just depending whether you hit a soft spot.

Tee boxes were in good condition and level unlike Brunswick yesterday. Rough areas were dormant and drier than the fairways for the most part. Tee shots that hit the rough often got 10-20 yards more roll than shots hitting the fairway. Bunkers looked well groomed, but beware the sand was soft and fluffy. Better bring a sand wedge with lots of bounce. Beverage cart made a few appearances which was nice. Didn't like the charity sales pitch on the 6th tee. Pace of play was pretty good the front side but slowed down a little on the back, but still finished in 4:30-4:40 time range. Practice area where the markers were was chewed up by 9:30am, not sure if they moved the markers from yesterday. Also could use an infusion of newer practice balls, a third of the balls were beat up pretty badly. Staff was friendly.

Overall the course was in pretty good shape and commensurate with the green fee paid. I have no hesitation returning.
