Golf Course Review

Review Course: Wild Wing Plantation - January 12, 2010

Wild Wing's course conditions overall were good. No hesitation returning.

Bent grass greens were in good health. Didn't think they were cut this morning with the frost, so they were a little bumpy, but not bad for mid-winter. Speed was between medium and medium-fast. I think if these were freshly cut the greens would roll excellently. One odd thing was they were actually watering the greens at about 11am. Not sure why they did that (grass isn't really growing) but it made the bunkers along the side of the greens wet & mushy.

Fairways the overseed was coming in good. However, they are still too soft to play the ball down despite an extended stretch of dry weather. The only time I got roll I hit a sprinkler head on #14! The rest of the drives I probably averaged -1 foot of roll. Yes the drives back up with chunks of mud too. Fortunately carts were allowed on the fairways.

Bunkers were in good shape other than they were wet from the sprinklers. No beverage cart today, but the girl inside the pub was cute, and you get a free draft beer for filling out a survey. Practice range was in great shape as were the balls. The staff fills the water cooler with 4 bottles of water which is a nice touch. Pace of play was good. Staff friendly. I'll return to Wild Wing but would not play there after a rain event as the fairways here play much softer than the average Myrtle Beach course.
